Palace approval for Stiebel Eltron heat pump

Heat pump manufacturer Stiebel Eltron has won ‘royal approval’ for one of its products after a trial at Buckingham Palace.

The Wirral based company provided one of its WWK300 Air Source Heat Pumps to the royal house in June.

The heat pump – installed by Worcester based Ecotech – was used throughout the summer at the Buckingham Palace Garden Parties, providing domestic hot water for the temporary washroom facilities.

Buckingham Palace is already known for its green credentials, with a 150m deep bore hole providing groundwater to supply air conditioning at the new Queen’s Gallery. Once this water has been used in the air conditioning process, it is recycled by topping up the water level in the lake and to irrigate the gardens in Buckingham Palace.

Further ways of utilising this natural resource have been developed by connecting the borehole distribution network to the main toilet block used in the summer for the Garden Parties and visitors to the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace. This initiative saved 262 cubic metres of clean potable mains water throughout the 2011 Garden Parties.

Neil Jimpson, Stiebel Eltron’s south of England specification manager, said: “We were delighted to provide one of our WWK300 heat pumps to the palace and throughout the summer it really hasn’t missed a beat. Thousands of people have used the washrooms over the past four months and not one problem was reported with the hot water.

“The WWK300 is a great piece of kit with the benefit that it can be used almost anywhere, for retrofit, new build or temporary units. It can be installed indoor and outdoor and has a low noise level, which made it perfect for the garden parties at Buckingham Palace. As it is such a robust and high quality product, it can be rolled out for use for many summers to come.”

Stiebel Eltron is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microgeneration technologies, including ground and air source heat pumps, solar PV and solar thermal systems.

The Stiebel Eltron WWK300 air source heat pump is one of the most efficient heat pumps on the market, giving up to 80 per cent on energy savings compared to an electric storage water heater.

It runs perfectly at night or in cloudy weather and can withstand all weather conditions above freezing temperature. With its coated evaporator, the WWK300 is also corrosion and salt resistant, making it ideal for seaside locations.

Mr Jimpson added: “We launched the WWK300 at the start of the summer and already have a wide number of developments where the heat pump is running successfully. This includes projects for Worcester University, Great Western Trains and the FSA building in Canary Wharf”.
